December 6-10

Our Christmas wreath is having in Lin's. It is right above the meat department. It looks amazing. Thanks to Cody's mom and Krystal's mom for their help in this endeavor.

Eighty-seven percent of our class is going to CVHS to see White Christmas on Monday afternoon. These are the students that met their November reading goal and returned their reading calendar.

The Fiddler's Christmas Choir Concert is Thursday at 2:30 for the student body. Friday morning we are having a pre-play seminar with Miranda Giles from SUU. Our class will go see A Christmas Carol on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 9:30 A.M. (More information soon to come.) Our room mothers are planning a Christmas party for the class for Friday, December 17 at 2:00 P.M.

We welcome a new girl this week, Andi, comes from Three Peaks Elementary. Andi makes 17 girls and we have 14 boys. We hope Andi likes our school and our classroom.

The PIZZA reward party will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. This is our prize for raising over $1,500 for the PTA and technology!

Friday will be busy with a field trip to the Heritage Center in the morning, and the Reflections' Awards Assembly in the afternoon.

Our class needs one more reading volunteer from 11-11:45 on Monday, or Wednesday, or Thursday. We so appreciate the volunteers that we do have. THEY'RE GREAT!!!!

November 1- 5

Thanks to Lily's mom for organizing our Halloween party. It was a lot of fun. Thanks also to all the mom's that helped everything run so smoothly. We had a great week and I'm happy to announce that our class won the GRAND PRIZE in the door decoration contest. We each made a little mummy and stuck them on the door with a sign that said, "Don't get wrapped up in drugs."

This week looks a little calm after last week, but we do have an Ice Cream Reward Party planned for Thursday at 3:00. Each student that reached their October reading goal of 400 minutes AND returned their reading calendar will get to walk down to the Arctic Circle for a free ice cream cone. Get those calendars in! The new November calendar will be coming home today.

Thanks to Krystal's mom and Cody's mom for helping us get the school Christmas Wreath finished and delivered to Lin's Grocery Store. Look for it when you're shopping.

October 26-29 Red Ribbon Week

This is Red Ribbon Week! Tuesday is "wear your clothes backward" day. Wear red on Wednesday.
Thursday is Hat Day. Friday is wear your Halloween Costume day. (See the costume rules in Mr. Whittier's e-mail.) As part of Red Ribbon Week, we have a drug-dog demonstration on Wednesday morning. The CVHS Marching Band will be here on Friday morning at 11:00.

We have a Marvin and Jessie assembly on Tuesday. It is all about doing service. Some students have already started. Zak swept up all the leaves that had blown into the classroom, and Cenedra washed off some lunchroom tables.

The PTA is throwing us a classroom Halloween Party on Friday afternoon. What a fun week we have!

October 4-8

Thanks to everyone that donated money and prizes to the school walk-a-thon. Our class won!!! We collected over $1,500.00. Our reward will be a pizza party in the near future. We also won Spirit Day on Friday, October 1.

We have a field trip planned to Zion National Park on Tuesday, October 12. We'll be gone all day. More information will be coming home soon.

The "Minute-to-Win-It" activity is on Wednesday at 12:30, all students that completed and returned their September reading calendar may participate.

A clay art project is planned for Wednesday at 1:30. This will become our 3-D entry in the PTA Reflections contest.

We had a great turn out for our "Moon Watch" last Thursday evening. The weather was perfect and the moon cooperated completely! Thanks to everyone who shared their telescopes with us.

This week we have a Life Skills assembly on Tuesday at 9 A.M. Our Life Skill for this coming month is Service. We'll start singing some new songs this week and we have a new volunteer piano player for October. Thanks to Mrs. Dailey for playing for us in September and thanks to Mrs. North for taking the month of October. Music is on Tuesday at 3:00. Stop by and sing with us sometime.

September 20 - 24

The third grades are planning a "Moon Watch" activity for Thursday night at 7:45 P.M. We will have a couple of telescopes set up on the third grade playground from 7:45- 8:30 P.M. Please try to stop by and take an up-close and personal look at the moon. We'll also have some binoculars available for all to use.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Cedar City Rotary Club will be coming by to present each third grader with their very own dictionary. The students will use the dictionaries in class this year and then bring them home in May.

Walk-a-thon is Thursday, September 16 from 12:45-1:15. You still have time to get some pledges.

DIBELS testing is Monday morning at 11:00. This year, we will be focusing on comprehension as well as fluency! So, you need to ask yourself, "What happened in the passage I just read?"

Mrs. Bayer will be attending a Creative Drama Workshop at SUU on Thursday, September 16. There will be a substitute teacher that day.

All registration materials are due back by Wednesday. The classes with all the materials turned in will get a free treat at the Wednesday PTA snack sale. We only need three more things to qualify.

Thursday is Domino's Pizza Night. Last year our school made quite a bit of money with this fundraiser. Thanks for all you do to support our students. Have a great week.

Thursday, September 2 is picture day. All students will have their photo taken. These are the pictures that go in the yearbook. If you want to purchase pictures, you need to bring your money with you on Thursday.

Thanks to all the parents and students that attended the 2010 Open House. We had quite a few people sign up to volunteer in the classroom. Thank you so much for recognizing the need for parent involvement in the classroom.

Thursday and Friday will be spent getting to know the classroom routines. There will be homework on both Thursday and Friday. We will start keyboarding on Monday and there will also be keyboarding homework for the first five weeks. Spelling words will start on the 23rd. I will begin individual reading assessments early next week. I plan to have the groups formed and be ready for volunteers right after Labor Day. I will call and let you know when to begin helping in our classroom. Again, thank you for volunteering and I look forward to working with you in meeting the needs of your children. Mrs. Bayer

May 24-28

This is the last week of third grade. (BooHoo)

Please come to the Spring Arts' Night tonight at 7:00. Our performance is at 7:15. Our artwork is displayed in the hall by our classroom and also on our desks. Don't forget to stop by the computer lab and see our power point projects.

Our nature hike is Thursday at 12:30. We'll hike up the Fiddler's Hiking Trail and then stop at Rachel's house and Dax's house for a rest. If it is really hot, we might run through the sprinklers at Josh's house to cool off.

The fourth quarter awards assembly is Friday at 10:00 A.M. School is out on Friday at 2:30.

It has been a great year and I have enjoyed working with your children. Thanks so much for all the volunteer hours that you have put in this year. Thanks to Mrs. Zortman for burning all the DVD's of our classroom movies. Thanks to Mrs. Jensen for playing the piano for us all year long, and we appreciate that she missed part of Tanner's game to play during the Arts' Night. Mrs. Eberhard was so willing to jump in and do whatever needed to be done. There isn't room to thank everyone that helped make this such a wonderful year. Solar Root Beer Recipe

1 teaspoon dry yeast
1/2 Cup warm water
2 Tablespoons root beer extract
2 Cups Sugar
Water

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. Fill a one gallon glass jug 1/2 full of warm water. Pour root beer extract on top of sugar. Add 1/2 cup of warm water and dissolve. Pour in yeast and sugar solution. Put lid on loosely. Wrap jar in a dark colored towel and set in the sun for 6 hours.

We had the best Banana Split Party on Friday. Thanks so much to everyone that donated food and utensils. Everyone had it "their way". We had enough ice cream that everyone was able to have seconds! Yum! Now keep reading for the entire month of May (twenty minutes each night).

Does anyone have a one gallon glass jar? We need one for one day. We'll return it to you as soon as our science experiment is finished.

March and April Home Reading Buckets need to be turned in on May 3. We only have two more weeks for finish up.

The DIBELS reading fluency assessment was given this week and our class went from a "mean" of 88 to 120! Yahoo!

TESTING: We took the IOWA Test of Basic Skills on Monday. The RIGBY READS Reading Evaluation Test is Wednesday. DIBELS reading fluency testing is scheduled for Monday, April 19.

The swimming parental consent forms went home on Monday. We swim next week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Our class is scheduled to be in the pool from 1:15- 1:45.

Mrs. Bassett will visit our classroom on Friday to talk about friendship.

Our class has been invited to the Cedar City Arbor Day ceremony on April 30 at 10:30 A.M.

We are still waiting for eight students to get their March Home Reading Calendar turned in.

We have a fun "Dr. Seuss Carnival" planned for March 2. Students must have their January and February reading calendars (buckets) filled in and returned by March 1 in order to participate in the carnival. So far, McCray is the only students going. Let's get those calendars in!

Our Valentines' Day Party will be on Friday at 2:30.

We've practiced our puppet plays and our songs this week. We should have another exciting video ready in a few weeks. Watch for our next movie.

Hooray!! Everyone got 100% on their last vocabulary test! They really know those words! Our vocabulary words for this week will be: majestic, vendor, adorn, emerald, organize, conceal, and restore.

Please send an empty cereal box sometime this week. We need to get started on making our Valentine's Day boxes. Please don't bring your actual valentines until Friday, February 12. We have 26 students in our class and one has a peanut allergy. The PTA will be planning our classroom party.

The achievement awards ceremony will be this Friday at 10:00 A.M. I will be leaving at noon on Friday for a math conference in SLC on Friday night and all day Saturday.

Kids' College is this very Friday! Hooray! Tuition for Kids' College is $5.00 Mustang Bucks.

The Q2 Awards Assembly is next Friday, February 5th at 10:00 A.M. in the school lunch room. We will be recognizing students with perfect attendance, near perfect attendance, excellent math test scores and we'll announce the winners of the addition competition!

January 19-22

Today is the first day of the second half of third grade! We are getting a new student today. David joins our class and makes it 12 boys and 15 girls. We welcome David to our class and our school.

Our spelling words for this week are: feet, side, boys, land, without, lost, standing, shoes, cold, from, their, its, too, different, home, large, form

The vocabulary words are the same as last week, we'll finish up our word study and take the test this Thursday.

The grades for the second quarter will be coming home on Thursday night. We have a Marvin and Jesse assembly coming up on Friday at 2:30.

Kids' College is coming up on the 29th.
